A great debate has arisen over the past couple of years: Should we stick with deodorant that has aluminum in it? Or should we all switch to aluminum-free deodorant? Aluminum is a common ingredient used to reduce the amount of sweat you produce, and the confusion comes from the pervasive myth that using some of your favorite antiperspirants can lead to scary health issues.
“These concerns include theories linking aluminum exposure to an increased risk of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, although scientific evidence supporting these links is inconclusive. Despite these concerns, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) have deemed aluminum-containing antiperspirants safe for use,” explains Lindsay Holdorf, a licensed esthetician, and Dermstore’s resident esthetician.
Top picks for the best aluminum-free deodorants in 2024
Despite the lack of clear evidence to support the claim that aluminum-infused deodorants are dangerous, some people deal with allergic reactions to or skin irritation from the ingredient, according to Holdorf. Thankfully, despite what naysayers might say, whether you’re struggling with those reactions or want to play it safe, there’s a wide selection of aluminum-free deodorants for sensitive skin that’ll keep body odor at bay. “Aluminum-free deodorants can still effectively control body odor through neutralizing bacteria and absorbing moisture, although they may not reduce sweat production as effectively as antiperspirants containing aluminum compounds. They often contain natural ingredients like baking soda, arrowroot powder, coconut oil, and essential oils to combat odor and provide a pleasant scent,” says Holdorf.
Paired with one of the best perfumes for women or a lovely body mist, one of the 15 best aluminum-free deodorants below is all you need to smell good all day, no matter the weather or your lifestyle. To make our selections, we consulted experts, read countless customer reviews, and asked fellow ELLE editors for their top recommendations.

Is aluminum bad for you?
“Aluminum salts are used to plug up the sweat glands in antiperspirants to reduce sweating,” says dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal. For a long time, there were concerns that aluminum in beauty products could be linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. However, according to Dr. Lal, that link has yet to be proven. Generally speaking, antiperspirants–aka products formulated to reduce sweat–are more likely to contain aluminum than deodorants, which are created to mask the scent of sweat.
Why should you use gentle deodorants?
Even though it’s still unclear if aluminum-free deodorants are much healthier for you, gentle formulas are usually a better choice for anyone with sensitive skin. Our underarms go through a lot–shaving or waxing, constant chafing, etc.—so formulas with gentle, clean ingredients reduce the risk of irritation.
